Every year right around December 25th I get one of my favorite things in the mail. The Burpee Seed Catalog. I set it aside until the madness is over and then I pour over that catalog, dog-earing pages and day dreaming about the amazing garden I'm going to have.
Eventually I toss it into the recycling without ordering one seed. But this morning as I went through the catalog I made a list of seeds to order. I haven't placed the order yet, but I'm going too. I'm starting small -- some herbs, tomatoes, zucchini, peppers, cucumbers, radishes, carrots.
Damn. I guess I'm not starting small.
The thing about living in Georgia is that spring really is just around the corner. As soon as the holidays are over I find myself wandering around the backyard daydreaming about all the things I could do.
This year I'm going to try and do some of them.

This is the year I really want to take the plunge and make myself a gardener instead of a daydreamer.
see... I'm always disappointed in their selection of burps.
Do it. I am. I am actually going to build a green house so I can try to have those things, herbs, tomatos, all year round. Yummy.
Do it! You won't regret it.
If you've never gardened before, I'd be happy to offer advice.
I made my first seed order last month and will be tackling my next one in the next week or so.
Wow, it's already time for me to start planning my garden!
I make a list every year of what we are going to plant but nothing ever gets done. This year we are paving the area around the 'garden' so I can't even pretend I'll plant anything because even the parts that don't get paved will be torn up from the earth moving equipment.
But then I swear I'm going to put raised beds in the leftover space
I love catalog shopping--picking everything and then not ordering a thing. But how can you resist? Your own garden! Good luck!
Oh how i wish spring was just around the corner in new york! happy ordering and planting!!
I WISH I lived in the South and had a longer growing season. Gardening in Wisconsin is truly an act of optimism!
My dad was an avid gardener and was into organic gardening long before it was "cool." He studied seed catalogs like they were the Holy Scriptures. He had a stroke and his health failed when he was still relatively young. When he couldn't garden anymore, it made me cry to see him poring over the seed catalogs as if he still could.
I'm so jealous that spring is just around the corner!! It's so cold right now, it just really doesn;t help with my mood.
Go Madge Go! Don't forget to post the pictures to inspire the rest of us.
This was always part of the future I envisioned for myself when I thought about being a "grownup." Hasn't happened yet...maybe someday.
Oh, I love this idea!! Good for you. Planting things, nurturing them, and you never know what will come out of it all.
I, myself, have a black thumb. This doesn't bode well...
My husband would consider that magazine porn. He is obsessed with gardening. Good luck with yours.
